The backbone also extends between buildings in a campus environment.
The media used is dependent on distances and applications. The data backbones may be a combination of category 5e, 6, 6e, multimode fiber and singlemode fiber. The voice backbones are typically category 3 multipair cables. The voice and data backbones may be colocated or built as two distinct networks.
